If any casual shopper strolled down Bridge Street ten years ago, they would see a town with vitality, diversity, and life. True, we all lament the loss of Coakley’s and the presence of Dick who, not only owned the place, but contributed so much to New Cumberland. Today, to walk down that street is to endure a plethora of low end businesses with any number of destitute stragglers just hanging around. As one who happily owned and operated a successful business for 20 years on the corner of 3rd and Bridge, the state of downtown New Cumberland is heartbreaking. I have to give praise to the several endeavors that have survived the downturn and continue to thrive. There is no question that the current and recent past of our national and local economy has affected many aspects of the consumer environment, but one only has to look at our neighboring communities of Lemoyne and Camp Hill to see that there still remains a drive to provide a satisfying downtown experience. There is only so much that can be done relative to the state of the economy. But there are things that can be done relative to the leadership that is charged with negotiating these downturns. I would like to think that the Borough Council has been and will continue to institute progress that will result in a more inviting business community. Any efforts in this direction will require a competent figure charged with presenting a face representing our town. In my opinion, and with all due respect, our previous Mayor did nothing to invigorate the efforts needed. And now we have a stand-in with no experience in this type of group management who has presented nothing more than a picture of himself with his kids. We all need to keep in mind that competent leadership, as opposed to the present temporary occupant of the office of Mayor, needs to to be foremost in our minds when elections come around. We all need an improvement to downtown. We cannot continue with the status quo.
